Restaurante La Terraza

Recently it was Dave and DeeDee’s last night in Loreto for this winter season. We are so sad to see them go, but really looking forward to their return in the fall!
Anyway, for their “Last Supper” DeeDee wanted sushi so we went to Restaurante La Terraza, located on Madero just above Cafe Ole. Ron and I had not eaten there for about a year so we were anxious to join them. Dave and DeeDee selected our first appetizer, Tostaditas. These are really excellent, they consist of a raw fish salad served atop a crispy fried tostada msquare. The flavor and texture were great, when you go definitely try  these! Ron and I then chose the entré, the mixed tempura seafood, vegetable platter. We requested only camarones (shrimp), as Ron and I are not fans of pulpo (octopus). This was wonderful and certainly enough for the four of us. They  have a very nice menu including many varieties of sushi rolls which are always very flavorful, yakameshi (fried rice) and many other offerings, including fried ice cream! They also offer a full bar and (for us summer residences) is well air-conditioned. They are located where Calle Francisco Madero begins as a pedestrian walkway right off Calle Miguel Hidalgo. Look for the somewhat hidden staircase next to Café Ole’. Their prices are low/moderate especially for Loreto. Please Enjoy!
Our staff that night included Miriam, Julius and Alexis (all so young, but very talented and well trained)!  If you see any of them on your visit, please say “Hi” from Dave, DeeDee, Ron and Peter!

Waicura

Eating out healthy in Loreto is not always easy, so  it is really nice to see many of our restaurants offering smoothies, fruit plates and vegetarian options. And now we have a fully Vegan choice as well. Waicura offers delicious whole grain waffles topped with fruit and other healthy toppings. They also offer a nice selection of tacos, burritos, burgers and hot dogs with imaginative choices such as garbanzo beans, lentils, soy chorizo, papas and more. Beverages include smoothies, fresh squeezed lemonada, orange juice and more.
Andreas and Armando are gracious hosts, speak very good English and are excited to share their food creations with you. For those of you who have never tried real vegan cooking, you will be pleasantly surprised at how tasty and flavor filled the food is. They are open Monday thru Saturday 9-9. They are located right across the street form El Pescador supermarket.

A little history about the name. The Guaycura (Waicura, Waikuri, Guaycuri) were a native people of Baja California Sur, occupying an area extending south from near Loreto to Todos Santos. They contested the area around La Paz with the Pericú. The Guaycura were nomadic hunter-gatherers. They are distinguished by a language unrelated to any other Native American language, indicating in the opinion of some linguists that their ancestry in Baja California dates back thousands of years.

Asadero Yumar

Another hidden night time gem! Excellent bean soup, tacos, tostados and Papa Rellenas. The best is you can get a media papa rellena, which is about half a potato with all the fixins baked in a casserole dish, perfect for one person. Friendly folks, clean. BYOB. Located on the right hand side of Benito Juarez near the west end. $ well worth the visit.

Sobrosos Gorditas by Yvette

There are lots of great, late night eats in Loreto, but the unique fried gorditas at Sobrosos Gorditas are amazing. A one woman show, Yvette makes each one to order and by hand. Stuffed with your choice of potatoes, beef, deshebrada and more, they are just simply delicious! Her stand is roadside next to a
nice tienda with plenty of cold beers and soft drinks. There are about 4 seats at the counter and a few small tables and the prices are ridiculously cheap. She is located on Madero just north of the intersection of Padre Kino. Her hours are about 7:00 pm until 11:00 or so. Stop by you won't be disappointed!

Pepe Gina's on the Plaza

It is always nice to enjoy a meal or a cocktail on the plaza. There is usually lots of activity, kids playing, teens holding hands, tourists walking by wide eyed and quite often a local event. It might be school kids performing dance routines, visiting performers for afar or local musicians. So it goes without saying that since they opened, Pepe Gina's on the plaza has been a favorite for DeeDee and I. The restaurant has grown in size and in it's menu offerings. Breakfast is always good, the fresh fruit plate is a favorite. The wood fired pizzas are excellent, and now with seafood and mexican offerings there is something for everyone. They have a full bar and serve great cocktails.  They have also added a bakery and coffee shop, featuring homemade breads, muffins, sweets, cappuccino, espresso and more.  And for a special treat, stop by Monday evenings and listen to the superb guitar sounds of our own local legend Herzon!  I'll add some specific food reviews after our next visit, which will be soon!

Tacos and Trivia at Bar Tlalocan

Bar Tlalocan seems to be a well kept secret here in Loreto, but I'm sure not for long. Outside is a menu board featuring several drink options for just $60 pesos! Recently a group of us visited this great little Loreto watering hole to participate in The Team Trivia contest that the bar was hosting. Once inside we were greeted by Carlos, the owner, bartender.  It was crowded, noisy and fun. We saw many of our Loreto acquaintances and met some new ones.
We ordered a Margarita, a glass of wine, a Cuba Libre and a shot of tequila. The Margarita was perfect, as was the Cuba Libre, the wine was a generous pour in a very nice wine glass, and the tequila came with a side of Sangrita, a spicy, tomato based drink that, as Carlos explained, is a traditional accompaniment to tequila in many parts of mainland Mexico. The drinks were excellent and a great value, so we decided to have another and check out the menu. The food selection, while limited is interesting, with homemade gazpacho,  guacamole, home baked cookies and sweets, and  tacos, including a vegetarian option. Our table ordered a variety of tacos. Ron and I had a combination of savory/delicious fish tacos and sweet/tangy shrimp tacos, both were great options. Others at our table enjoyed the chicken and vegetarian (which looked incredible) tacos. Impressively all the tacos had a completely independent flavors, all prepared by chef Michelle. Order a selection, you will not be disappointed! Dinner was also served briskly and efficiently. The Trivia game was also a blast, but that is for a different blog.Carlos speaks very good English and is a wealth of information about Mexico, Tequila and music. There are several nice TV's for sports, comfortable seating, a nice bar and great seats overlooking the street. A cozy, comfortable place that we will definitely return to. Bar Tlalocan is located on Calle Miguel Hidalgo across the street from the plaza steps.
Carlos has recently added a few more menu items, be sure to stop by and check them out.

Jr. And George

Located just off the plaza, behind the Rick Jackson Gallery heading towards the Malecon is Jr and George. The garden setting is very nice with tables spaced between plants and trees. The menu is quite diverse, with lots of seafood choices, tacos, burgers and stuffed potatoes. DeeDee, myself and our friends Paul and Wendy stopped by for dinner.
The table was nicely set and we were greeted as we arrived. Paul had a beer and Wendy a top shelf Margarita, DeeDee and I brought a bottle of wine. After our drinks were served, our order was promptly taken and we were treated to complimentary warm sopes, that everyone enjoyed. Paul and I each ordered a green salad and a stuffed potato. Wendy ordered the chipotle shrimp and DeeDee a burger. The salads arrived, it consisted of mostly lettuce and was served with two choices of dressing, a vinaigrette and ranch, nether of which had very much flavor, and for $90 pesos was  disappointing. Our meals, on the other hand, were all quite good. DeeDee thought her bacon cheese burger was excellent, Paul had the Mexicana Potato and I had the vegetarian option, both were plenty large enough for a meal, loaded with toppings and melted cheese. Wendy's shrimp were excellent, the meal being accompanied by a small salad and rice. The presentation was very nice. We finished our meal with a piece of home made flan, that was also very good. We all agreed the salads were overpriced and average at best, the drinks were a bit pricey also, especially the $250 peso corkage fee added to our tab. The steaks and meats are cooked on an open mezquite fire and looked really good,
