Bar Tlalocan seems to be a well kept secret here in Loreto, but I'm sure not for long. Outside is a menu board featuring several drink options for just $60 pesos! Recently a group of us visited this great little Loreto watering hole to participate in The Team Trivia contest that the bar was hosting. Once inside we were greeted by Carlos, the owner, bartender. It was crowded, noisy and fun. We saw many of our Loreto acquaintances and met some new ones.
We ordered a Margarita, a glass of wine, a Cuba Libre and a shot of tequila. The Margarita was perfect, as was the Cuba Libre, the wine was a generous pour in a very nice wine glass, and the tequila came with a side of Sangrita, a spicy, tomato based drink that, as Carlos explained, is a traditional accompaniment to tequila in many parts of mainland Mexico. The drinks were excellent and a great value, so we decided to have another and check out the menu. The food selection, while limited is interesting, with homemade gazpacho, guacamole, home baked cookies and sweets, and tacos, including a vegetarian option. Our table ordered a variety of tacos. Ron and I had a combination of savory/delicious fish tacos and sweet/tangy shrimp tacos, both were great options. Others at our table enjoyed the chicken and vegetarian (which looked incredible) tacos. Impressively all the tacos had a completely independent flavors, all prepared by chef Michelle. Order a selection, you will not be disappointed! Dinner was also served briskly and efficiently. The Trivia game was also a blast, but that is for a different blog.Carlos speaks very good English and is a wealth of information about Mexico, Tequila and music. There are several nice TV's for sports, comfortable seating, a nice bar and great seats overlooking the street. A cozy, comfortable place that we will definitely return to. Bar Tlalocan is located on Calle Miguel Hidalgo across the street from the plaza steps.
Carlos has recently added a few more menu items, be sure to stop by and check them out.
